Ambulatory Care
PGY2 Program Purpose: PGY2 pharmacy residency programs build on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and PGY1 pharmacy residency programs to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists in specialized areas of practice. PGY2 residencies provide residents with opportunities to function independently as practitioners by conceptualizing and integrating accumulated experience and knowledge and incorporating both into the provision of patient care or other advanced practice settings. Residents who successfully complete an accredited PGY2 pharmacy residency are prepared for advanced patient care, academic, or other specialized positions, along with board certification, if available.
General Program Description
This one-year position provides the resident with the academic rank of Clinical Instructor with the OU College of Pharmacy. The residency will provide opportunities to practice in interdisciplinary as well as pharmacist-managed collaborative practice clinics. Learning experiences are planned to meet the individual developmental needs of the resident. Residents are required to design an original research project and/or participate in ongoing research projects as well as present and publish their work. Residents are also required to complete a longitudinal teaching certificate program and are involved in didactic and experiential teaching throughout the program.
Core Experiences
Practice Sites
The residency is offered and administered by the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center College of Pharmacy. Longitudinal experiences include participation in the outpatient general internal medicine clinic and the outpatient pediatric clinic. OU-affiliated ambulatory care sites, community engagement, transitions of care, and comprehensive medication management. Additionally, residents will have the opportunity to participate in a 1-week diabetes camp with the Harold Hamm Diabetes Center serving as part of the medical team.
Research
Residents complete a research curriculum, which includes the OUHSC Institutional Review Board (IRB) certification for conducting human research and specific research training sessions through Resident Rounds. Each resident designs and executes an original research project under the mentorship of their research committee, which consists of the residency program director, an expert in the practice area in which research will be conducted, and an expert in study design, data analysis, and statistical methods. Residents present preliminary research findings as a poster at the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting and final results as a podium presentation at the Oklahoma Residency Research Conference. In accordance with ASHP standards, residents prepare a high-quality manuscript based on their research findings. The research experience is longitudinal.
Teaching
The resident delivers at least two lectures to healthcare professional students. Residents may also assist with small group facilitation, lab work and/or course coordination. The resident will participate in experiential rotation teaching and APPE precepting with a goal of primary precepting towards the end of the residency program. Teaching experiences are longitudinal.
Practice Management
The resident will participate in a month-long (at a minimum) experience focused on practice development. The resident will participate in discussions that facilitate development of a clinical service business plan that will be related to their future position.
