General Application Requirements

Pharmacy

Admission to the Doctor of Pharmacy program is on a competitive basis. A class of approximately 140 students is admitted each fall semester to the Doctor of Pharmacy program. Residents of Oklahoma receive some preference in the selection process but all qualified candidates are encouraged to apply. Applicants who have completed all admissions requirements and an interview are generally advised of their admission status by April of the admission year.

For admission to Fall 2010, the PharmCAS application must be submitted by November 2, 2009. The PharmCAS application is available at http://www.pharmcas.org. All official college transcripts, three (3) letters of reference, and PCAT scores (Code 104) must be submitted directly to PharmCAS. The PCAT must be taken prior to the November 2 deadline. The most recent score is used by the Admissions Committee when making decisions. Applicants are advised to take this into consideration when choosing to take the PCAT multiple times. It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that you select to have your references submitted electronically to PharmCAS. Electronic references are the PREFERRED METHOD of receipt.

The College of Pharmacy supplemental application must also be submitted by November 2, 2009.

You MUST list your Fall 2009 and projected Spring 2010 coursework on the PharmCAS application and updated Fall 2009 transcripts MUST be submitted to PharmCAS by January 15, 2010 for full consideration by the Admissions Committee. Late or incomplete applications will not be considered for admission. Applicants should successfully complete all required pre-pharmacy courses and provide the College with an official transcript showing spring course grades by June 1 of the admission year. If an applicant has been offered conditional acceptance, failure to meet these requirements in a manner as prescribed by the Admissions Committee will result in the acceptance offer being withdrawn. Please contact the Office of Pharmacy Student Affairs should you have any questions regarding specific policies.

Failure to meet deadlines or to submit any of the required application materials will constitute a late or incomplete application and will not be considered for admission.

Admission Requirements

Pre-Pharmacy Requirements

Applicants must complete all pre-pharmacy requirements with a grade of C or above and maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale to be considered for admission. Although a minimum GPA of 2.5 is required to apply, students generally have substantially higher averages to be considered competitive in the selection process. Official transcripts reflecting all pre-pharmacy coursework must be submitted by June 1 of the admission year.

Although all attempts of a pre-requisite course are included in the calculation of the GPA, applicants should be aware that the most recent attempt of a pre-requisite course will be the grade on record in determining completion of requirements. This means that an applicant’s last attempt of a course must be a C or better to maintain eligibility for admission. Applicants are required to be in good standing at the college or university currently or last attended. The college reserves the right to withdraw an offer of admission if (1) the student fails to keep his or her file current. This includes but is not limited to a change in enrollment from what was reported on the application; (2) the pre-requisite, overall or semester GPA shows a significant drop or the applicant receives a grade of “D” or “F” in any course during the fall or spring semester of the application year; (3) information is received indicating that the student’s character is such that he or she is not suited for the responsibility and privileges found in the practice of pharmacy. All applicants must be eligible for licensure as a pharmacy intern in the State of Oklahoma and have a reasonable chance to successfully complete the professional curriculum. All applicants must meet the technical standards for admission to the college. In order to meet curricular requirements, background checks and drug screenings must be completed.

Steps to Applying

PharmCAS Application Process

Application for admission to the Doctor of Pharmacy program requires completion of the Pharmacy College Application Service (PharmCAS) application. Official transcripts, PCAT scores (code 104), and recommendation letters should be submitted directly to PharmCAS. Applicants who have previously applied must create a new PharmCAS application and submit all documentation as materials cannot be forwarded from previous application years.

PharmCAS Online Application Process

Supplemental Application

The College of Pharmacy requires a supplemental application. The supplemental application fee is $65.00. This includes the fee for applying to the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center as well as a processing fee for the supplemental application. The supplemental application can be found at https://app.applyyourself.com/?id=uok-phar. This application will be available in July.

Additional supplemental documents may be requested upon review of your application at the discretion of the Admissions Committee. An application is considered incomplete if the supplemental application is not received by the deadline.

Recommendation Letters

The Admissions Committee requires each applicant to provide three letters of recommendation which provide insight into the applicant’s personal, academic, and professional characteristics. Applicants should solicit letters from those who can best attest to your ability to be successful in pharmacy school. Examples are professors, employers, volunteer supervisors, or health care professionals, preferably a pharmacist. These individuals should know the applicant well, and be in a position to evaluate the applicant’s potential for academic success and a career in pharmacy. We do not accept letters from family, friends or clergy members. We do not accept more than three letters of recommendation or letters mailed directly to the college. All letters should be submitted directly to PharmCAS. Please visit http://www.pharmcas.org for instructions regarding submission. It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that you select to have your references submitted electronically to PharmCAS. Electronic references are the PREFERRED METHOD of receipt.

Transcripts

Applicants are responsible for the submission of official transcripts from each institution attended directly to PharmCAS. All transcripts are due by November 2. Please note that PharmCAS will not accept transcripts sent directly by applicants. Transcripts must be sent directly from the college or university. Applicants taking courses in the fall semester, must submit their fall transcripts to PharmCAS by January 15 of the year they wish to enter the College.

Applicants who have not provided transcripts by this date will not be invited to interview.

HSC requires that foreign coursework be evaluated by the World Education Services (WES). This course-by-course evaluation involves additional fees and time for transcript evaluation. Applicants should take this into consideration when trying to meet deadlines. WES evaluations should be submitted directly to PharmCAS. Refer to the WES web site (http://www.wes.org) for complete information.

All required prerequisite coursework should be successfully completed by the end of the spring semester of the admission year. Official transcripts that include the spring semester work should be submitted directly to the College of Pharmacy by June 1 of the admission year to demonstrate successful completion of the required coursework or the applicant’s enrollment may be terminated. Please refer to the Office of Pharmacy Student Affairs for more details regarding additional conditions of admission or to other sections on this page for additional requirements.

Pharmacy College Admission Test (PCAT) Scores

Each applicant is required to take the Pharmacy College Admission Test (PCAT) prior to the November 2 deadline. PCAT scores should be submitted directly to PharmCAS (code 104). Applicants choosing to take the October PCAT exam for the first time should be aware that no decision regarding an interview can be made until those scores are received from PharmCAS. The College must receive PCAT scores directly from PharmCAS for consideration for an interview. Although applicants should release all PCAT scores to PharmCAS (code 104), only the most recent score will be used to determine eligibility for admission. PCAT results taken after November 1 of the admission year will not be considered for an interview for that same admission year. However, if an applicant has already been invited to interview and has taken the January PCAT, that score can be considered by the Admissions Committee. Additionally, January PCAT results could be used for the next admission year if an applicant is unsuccessful in gaining admission. For information on registering for the PCAT, please visit www.pcatweb.info.

TOEFL Scores

The TOEFL exam is required for all applicants for whom English is a second language. TOEFL scores may not be more than 2 years old. A minimum score of 550 (Paper-based), 213 (Computer-based), or 79 (Internet-Based) is required for admission. TOEFL scores should be released directly to PharmCAS (code 8246). For more information on TOEFL requirements or waivers of the requirement, please go to http://www.ouhsc.edu/admissions/International_Applicants_Official_TOEFL_Scores.htm. If you are an international student, please visit the OU Health Sciences Center website for full details on additional requirements for international applicants. http://www.ouhsc.edu/admissions/International_Applicants_Confidential_Financial_Statement.htm

Personal Interview

The Admissions Committee requires a personal interview to assess an applicant’s communication skills as part of the admission process. Interviews are by invitation only and are based upon the applicant’s completed application. We receive many more applications than we have available seats, therefore, not all applicants will receive an interview. Applicants who have not submitted official transcripts of all completed coursework prior to January 15 of the admission year or who do not meet GPA and/or PCAT criteria established by the Admissions Committee will not be invited to interview. Additionally, applicants must demonstrate that they are on track to complete the pre-requisite coursework by June 1 of the admission year. It is the applicant’s responsibility to carefully review the pre-requisite course requirements to make sure they are eligible for admission prior to applying. If an applicant has a question about course eligibility then they are encouraged to contact the Office of Pharmacy Student Affairs for clarification.

In general, applicants can be considered competitive for an interview if they have at least a 3.0 pre-requisite GPA and a composite PCAT score of the 50th percentile with no subscore lower than the 25th percentile. Applicants not meeting these credentials may contact the Office of Pharmacy Student Affairs for more information on application strategies. Additionally, applicants should have no negative letters of recommendation and a compelling interest in the pharmacy profession and the college as a whole.

Interviews are generally scheduled during February and March of the admission cycle and are held on the Oklahoma City campus. An invitation to interview does not imply acceptance for admission, and all expenses incurred during the interview are the responsibility of the applicant. Applicants must interview in person on their assigned day and time. Interviews cannot be conducted via telephone due to the nature of the activities that occur that day. During the interview day, the applicant is asked to complete a written essay covering a general topic chosen by the Admissions Committee. Both the essay and interview scores are used in evaluating an application for admission.

Notifications of an interview are made via e-mail and usually occur throughout January and early February based on receipt of fall grade information. Please make sure that the Office of Pharmacy Student Affairs has your correct e-mail address that you check most often.

There is typically a morning and afternoon session on the day of the interview. Interviews last half a day and include a timed essay, panel interview and tour among other activities.
