Valedictorian Award

Awarded to the graduating senior with the highest pharmacy grade point average (GPA).

The College of Pharmacy also recognizes outstanding academic and professional performance by students. Most of the honors listed below are presented at the annual Pharmacy Day Awards Banquet or College of Pharmacy Convocation. The student organizations also recognize special achievements of their members annually.


Dean's List

Pharmacy students who are enrolled full-time in good standing, earn a grade point average of 3.00 or above with no grades below B, and rank in the upper 20% of their class for each semester are placed on the Dean's List.

Convocation Awards

Several special honors are presented each year at the College of Pharmacy Convocation. The Valedictorian is the graduating senior who has maintained the highest total and professional grade-point average. The Most Congenial Senior is selected by the members of the graduating class. The Mosier Senior Scholar Award is presented to a graduating senior for outstanding leadership and service to the college. Students who have been elected to Rho Chi and Phi Lambda Sigma Honor Societies are formally recognized at the convocation along with those to be graduated with distinction.

Students who complete the pharmacy program with a professional grade-point average of 3.50 - 3.74 are graduated with Distinction and those with a professional grade-point average of 3.75 - 4.00 are graduated with Special Distinction. This honor is inscribed on the diploma and is designated in the commencement and convocation ceremony programs. Students who maintain a perfect 4.00 total grade-point average will also receive an OU Seal Medallion on a red and white ribbon as a separate recognition from University offices.

Pharmacy Day Awards

Pharmacy Day culminates a week of special activities each spring and ends with an awards banquet where students, alumni, and faculty are recognized for special achievements. The recipients of the awards and endowed or annual scholarships are selected by the Academic Standing Committee based upon nominations by the faculty and/or specific academic achievements by the individual students.

Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database Award

The new edition, certificate, and a one year subscription to the Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database is presented to a graduating student who has demonstrated promise in improving care and shows an appreciation for scientific inquiry and an evidence-based approach to evaluating natural medicines.

*Merck Award

An engraved Merck Manual and Merck Index are presented by Merck and Company to each of two graduating seniors for outstanding research and scholastic achievement.

*Mosier Senior Scholar of the Year Award (Dean's Award)

The recipient of the Mosier Senior Scholar Award is chosen from among students nominated by the faculty for making outstanding contributions to the College of Pharmacy. This award recognizes an individual who has given much to the college during their tenure as a student. The trustees of the Henry D. and Ida Mosier Estate also recognize this student as Mosier Senior Scholar of the Year with an attractive stipend.

Most Congenial Senior Award

The Most Congenial Senior is an especially honored award for graduating seniors because the recipient is selected by peers.

Mylan Award

A framed certificate and the reference book "Drug Interactions Facts" are presented by Mylan Pharmaceuticals to a first year student for academic excellence and high professional motivation.

Recipients of these awards are recommended to the Dean by the Academic Standing Committee. Nominations are obtained from the faculty for several of the awards (*).

*APhA-ASP Professionalism Award

A hand-turned wooden replica of a revolutionary war period mortar and pestle presented to a senior student for outstanding professionalism by McNeil Consumer Products Company on behalf of American Pharmacists Association (APhA). The recipient is eligible to compete for a McNeil Scholarship to be used for continuing education in pharmacy.

*ASHP Leadership Award

A certificate and current edition of AHFS Drug Information are presented by the American Society of Heath-Systems Pharmacists (ASHP) through a grant from Norwich Eaton to a P-3 student for scholastic achievement, leadership, and demonstrated interest in pharmacy practice in health-systems hospitals, home care, managed care, and long term care facilities.

*Facts and Comparisons Award

A set of four Facts and Comparisons reference books and marble book ends are presented to a graduating senior for outstanding scholastic achievement and demonstrated excellence in clinical communications.

*GlaxoSmithKline Award

An engraved plaque and 4 reference books presented by GlaxoSmithKline to a graduating senior for superior achievement in patient care. Formerly known as Smith-Kline French and Smith-Kline Beecham Award.

A certificate and membership in the American Institute of History of Pharmacy are presented by the Institute to a student for outstanding achievement in studies of the history of pharmacy.

Lilly Achievement Award
