The National Community Pharmacists Association, in recognizing Walter Scheffe as Independent Pharmacist of the Year stated, "Walter P. It is apparent that he never tires of work no matter how difficult the task. His goal is obviously to do the best in all that he is involved. This is exemplified by the Scheffe Prescription Shop, which is one of the most modern pharmacies in the country and clearly dedicated to serving his community well. … Walter P. Scheffe is truly an exemplary role model and certainly well deserving of recognition as Independent Pharmacist of the Year."

Walter Scheffe has served The University of Oklahoma College of Pharmacy as:

Walter Scheffe has been recognized by his community and profession through several awards, including:

  • A. H. Robins Bowl of Hygeia Award,
  • Albert E. Rosica, Jr. Memorial Award from the American College of Apothecaries,
  • Ralph D. Bienfang Outstanding Practitioner Award,
  • OU College of Pharmacy Alumni Association Merit and Distinguished Service Award,
  • Enid Citizen of the Year.

Walter began his pharmacy career as a teenager, delivering prescriptions on a bicycle for a drugstore in Enid. Following his graduation from the OU College of Pharmacy in 1939, he served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II. Returning to Enid, he opened Scheffe Prescription Shop. Polio immunization was one of the first county-wide projects in the nation and was organized through his efforts. The Garfield County campaign saw 40,000 of its 50,000 residents take advantage of this program in 1962.
