The University of Oklahoma First Lady Molly Shi Boren planted the seed
of the idea for the benches, and that seed has blossomed as part of the
University’s ongoing campus beautification efforts. More than 180
teakwood benches have been placed on our campuses. The first six were gifts
of President and Mrs. David L. Boren in honor of family members and mentors.
The University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center strategically places benches
received from thoughtful contributors. More are welcome and will be effectively
used as peaceful retreats on the Oklahoma City and Tulsa campuses. To accomplish
this, special gifts are being made by thoughtful corporate and individual
contributors.
The benches each carry a long-lasting zinc plate engraved with the name of the donor and/or his or her designated honoree(s). Manufactured by Smith and Hawken, a national garden implement distributor, the 100-pound, solid teakwood benches are eight feet long. Teakwood is premium quality, requiring no maintenance and chosen for its durability, weather resistance and maturing beauty. Each bench is securely anchored in an attractive landscaped setting.
