Walter began his pharmacy career as a teenager, delivering prescriptions on a bicycle for a drugstore in Enid. Following his graduation from the OU College of Pharmacy in 1939, he served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II. Returning to Enid, he opened Scheffe Prescription Shop. Polio immunization was one of the first county-wide projects in the nation and was organized through his efforts. The Garfield County campaign saw 40,000 of its 50,000 residents take advantage of this program in 1962. |
